Malta Gaming Authority launched a consultation targeted at its licensees in order to collect their feedback and input on a voluntary Environmental, Social, and Governance Code of Good Practice. This consultation is an opportunity for the licensees of Malta Gaming Authority to actively participate in and contribute further towards this code.
In 2022, the MGA embarked upon a journey – underpinned by the Authority’s objective of promoting a sustainable gaming sector that safeguards players’ rights – to explore the development of such a code, with the aim of guiding and preparing licensees for upcoming ESG legislation (particularly the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive), and of helping them reap the benefits of running a sustainably-conscious operation.
The ESG code is intended to be a tool for self-regulation. It helps remote gaming companies to align themselves with industry best practices, and to maintain a position which allows them to meet the changing expectations of key stakeholders.
The ESG draft code is the culmination of a six month journey that included three stages: peer review, research, and interviews with stakeholders. Pre-consultation activities laid a solid basis for future consultations. They ensured that the code was well-informed, and reflected the ESG priorities of the industry and stakeholder expectations.
It is now time for the final round of feedback by key stakeholders.
The proposed code is applicable to remote gaming companies. However, the Authority is looking into the possibility of expanding it to land-based entities in Malta. This will be done in the future with the ESG disclosures adapted to suit the needs.
