The Detroit Lions’ GM Brad Holmes opened up about his decision to select Jahmyr gibbs in first round. Gibbs had initially expected to be selected late in first round and then as one of the top picks for the class 2023.
The Lions failed to make the playoffs last season despite an impressive run of form that saw Dan Campbell’s Ford Field team win eight out of their last 10 games. This was after a terrible start where they only won one of their seven games. They fell at the last hurdle.
The Lions are expected to have a successful season and return to the post-season for the first since 2016. The signing of Gibbs, a youngster, could be instrumental in this regard.

The general manager Holmes has been following Gibbs’ progress for some time and stated that he wanted bring the Alabama graduate to his team.
“I fell in love first with him and didn’t really know him because he had been at Georgia Tech for the previous year,”
“I saw him first at the Alabama-Texas match or earlier this year, and I noticed his body type. This guy is intriguing.” Then I saw him in both phases.
“He can run, yes, but I’m more interested in what he does as a receiver, his explosiveness, and all the other things about him. We just kept working on him.”
The 21-year old Georgian born talent was surprised to see himself so early in draft.
“Yeah I thought about the 20s, because that is where running backs are usually found,”
“I feel great. “I was surprised to be picked so high because running backs aren’t picked as highly in the new NFL draft. But it was pretty amazing for me.”
“But I am grateful for the city Detroit.”
Campbell wants his Lions to start fast and avoid the disastrous start he had in his first year in charge. He has been thinking hard about ways to prevent this from happening again.
“Yeah you go back and forward and that’s what I’m constantly thinking about, is how can we do this?”
“Is it possible to use a different method? Were we too light? Were we too hard? Need more volume? Do we need more volume? “We’re still a long way from training camp, so everything we do right now doesn’t necessarily relate to your question.”
It’s easy to imagine that the solid second half of the 2022 regular season will be a good foundation for the team, and Gibbs Holmes and Campbell are eager to start.
Detroit will be able to enjoy a thrilling opening game when the Lions take on the Kansas City Chiefs.
