Two licensees of Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation have donated Php60,000,000 to the Veterans Memorial Medical Center for construction of the Magiting Veterans Wing, which began on Friday, 22 September.
The Magiting Veterans Wing was initiated by the Philippine Military Academy Magiting class of 1970, with support from Bloomberry Cultural Foundation Inc. and Newport World Resorts Foundation, Inc.
PAGCOR approved the release of Php30,000,000 by each foundation, representing Solaire Resorts and Newport World Resorts.
The project will be completed in two phases. The first phase, sponsored by BCFI, will cover civil, structural and mechanical works as well as electrical and masonry work, and waterproofing of the roof deck. While, the second phase, funded by NWRFI, will consist of fixtures, devices and works.
The Magiting Wing has a total area of 1379.84 sqm and will include 12 private rooms, including four suites. It will also have a nurse’s station, lounge, storage area, hallways, an access ramp, and a connecting bridge with the main hospital.
PAGCOR’s Chairman and CEO Alejandro H. Tengco stated that the agency had approved the grant because of the noble goal of the project.
“PAGCOR acknowledges the patriotism of Filipino veterans, who have sacrificed their youth, vitality, strength, and sometimes even lives to serve our country. “By supporting this noble project we show our appreciation to our modern heroes and their family members,” he said.
Tengco stated that all integrated resort casinos in the country must set up a Foundation to fund Corporate Responsibility programs for education infrastructure, healthcare facilities, environmental protection and cultural heritage restoration.
These foundations receive two percent of gross gaming revenue from non-junket table licensees.
Gilberto C. Teodoro (Defense Secretary) expressed his gratitude to all the supporters of the project during the ceremonial pouring of concrete.
He said: “As donee we will cover all maintenance costs and operating expenses to ensure that your donations do not go to waste.”
Teodoro added that other plans for improving the welfare of Filipino Veterans include decentralising VMMC services and upgrading hospital staff so that doctors and specialist can focus on caring more for patients.
“No soldier ever retires. They are part of the system. “They provide guidance and assistance to our active personnel, so their job is never finished,” he said.
DMCI, San Miguel Corporation, and retired military personnel are also major sponsors.
