GamCare published the most recent recommendations on how to address gambling-related debt. They recommend better referral pathways between sectors in order to assist those who are suffering from harm.
The National Gambling Treatment Service data, which was also compiled by GamCare’s workshop, showed that six out of ten people seeking help for gambling addiction had gambling debts. Only 2% were insolvent.
GamCare emphasizes the importance of gambling-related debt as one reason why some people may become homeless or have housing problems.
60 people attended the workshop that resulted in the recommendations. Experts from Bristol University, Lloyds Bank, PayPlan, Step Change, Citizens Advice and Bristol University also provided further insight.
Emma Gibbons is the Vulnerable Client Leader at PayPlan. She said that as part of our partnership, GamCare has a specialist advice team who work closely to GamCare. This ensures a ‘tell me once’, confidential, and customized approach to clients’ needs.
“We have made sure that all our staff have been trained by GamCare to be able to recognize the signs and obstacles clients face when tackling gambling-related financial damage.”
Katie Fry is Citizens Advice’s Project Development Manager. She stated that by referring people directly to GamCare, they can quickly get the support they need to solve their problems.
