The Danish Gambling Authority won a court ruling in Frederiksberg on 22 August 2024 to block 79 websites that were offering illegal gambling to Danes.
Sites that are aimed specifically at children and youth are among the sites blocked.
The Danish Gambling Authority (DGA) blocks every year websites that offer gambling services and products to Danes who do not have a license. The Danish Gambling Authority uses the blocks to ensure that the gambling market is fair and legal in Denmark, while also protecting the players.
The Danish Gambling Authority blocked access to 162 illegal gambling websites in 2024. It is the most blocks ever in one year. Since 2012, 438 websites were blocked from being accessed by a Danish telecoms provider.
Danish Gambling Authority, which has twice been to court this year to block illegal gambling websites, makes the decision to block websites. In February, 83 web pages were blocked.
A DNS block is used by the Danish Gambling Authority to block illegal websites. The player’s telecom provider blocks the connection to the gambling provider website. When a user attempts to access a website that has been blocked, they will be greeted with a message stating the site was illegal and blocked by Danish Gambling Authority.
“We are aware that some players may try to bypass DNS blocks. It is important that we make sure that any information that you provide is clear, and that players are aware they are trying access a website without a license. The sites are not protected by the same consumer protection standards and can pose a risk to players.
Sites that do not have a license from the Danish Gambling Authority may not meet the same standards as those with a license, so players will not receive the same level of protection or security.
If you’re under 18, or registered on ROFUS, (Register of Voluntarily Excluded Players), you can’t play at a site that requires a license.
These sites block different gambling types such as online casinos, online betting, and skin betting.
Three of the 79 websites in the most recent block offered a new form of skin betting. Players can use Robux as stakes and win Robux, which is the currency of the computer game Roblox.
“We are paying special attention to this type of website. Roblox is one of the most popular games amongst children and teenagers under 18. Anders Dorph said that our children shouldn’t be exposed to gambling through video games.
The Danish Gambling Authority will ask the gambling provider to stop offering illegal gambling if it is determined that the website does not have a license. The telecommunications companies are then asked to block the access of their customers to the website if the gambling provider does not stop. The Danish Gambling Authority can proceed with the case if this doesn’t happen and will ask the district courts to order that the Danish telecommunications companies block the websites.
Previously, the Danish Gambling Authority only blocked telecommunications companies that were members of Teleindustrien.
Three telecommunications companies that are not members Teleindustrien also blocked the access to illegal sites in this round.
Three telecommunications companies have blocked websites that offer illegal gambling. These websites were included in this process, as well as those covered by previous rulings.
