The William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award was established in 1989 to recognize excellence in sports writing. It is now in its 35 th year and is the longest-running competition for sports writing.
Patrice Evra and Anyika Onuora were among the authors who entered 158 books last year, a record. Jeremy Wilson won the title. Judges praised his book ‘Beryl, In Search of Britain’s Greatest Athlete’ because of its thorough research and excellent writing.
Organisers encourage authors, journalists, athletes, and publishers to submit books as soon as possible in order to allow the reading panel as much time to review each entry. Many of the books that made it to the final list, including the winner, were submitted early last year.
The longlist will be revealed in September 2023 after a rigorous selection process by a panel that includes journalists, authors, and sportspeople as well as industry leaders. The shortlist will be unveiled in October.
On the 30th November 2023, the overall winner will be announced at an awards ceremony at BAFTA, London, 195 Piccadilly. All shortlisted authors will receive PS3,000 as well as a leather-bound book and the winning prize.
Matt Williams, a book review panellist and well-known sports broadcaster, said that the William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award was the most prestigious prize in the industry and that it was an honor to be able to read every book submitted.
We encourage all agents, publishers, and authors to submit their titles as soon as possible. The process for finding our next champion starts as soon as we receive the first entry. We urge authors to submit their books before the summer rush.
“The Award has been a leader in championing excellence and sporting literacy for more than 30 years, giving authors a platform to promote and showcase their books. We’re extremely excited about this year’s competition, following a stellar 2022 year of entries.
We are interested in hearing about the extraordinary creative minds and writing talents that span a wide range of subjects.
“It doesn’t matter if the book is a bestseller, it’s what the writing is that interests us – and the ultimate winner will always be a highly deserving champion of sporting literature.”
