Electronic sports or esports has grown to be a worldwide phenomenon. Millions of people tune in to view competitive video games online and in person. Esports are gaining popularity and it is important to promote diversity and inclusion in the industry, especially in terms of gender.
Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA), has been actively promoting female participation in esports since 2009. This is important for many reasons. It is a matter for fairness and equality. Esports should offer women the same opportunities as men to succeed and compete. Promoting gender diversity in the industry can help break down barriers and create an inclusive environment for all.
Colin Webster, President of MSSA, said that there are practical reasons why more women play esports. It can grow the industry. Esports companies and organizations can tap into the growing market of women gamers to reach more people and increase their revenue streams.
Webster said, “Additionally having more females in esports could help to address some toxic behaviors and attitudes which have plagued this industry in the past.” Women have been subject to harassment and discrimination in the past, but by encouraging gender diversity and inclusion we can create a more welcoming community.
Female players can also reap the benefits. Participating in esports can help women gain valuable skills in communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and teamwork. They may also earn Regional, Provincial, and National Colours which could be used to assist them in applying for bursaries. These skills can be used in other areas of their lives such as their career or their personal relationships.
MSSA is acutely aware that increasing female participation in esports has its difficulties. The industry is still underrepresented and women who participate face many obstacles and barriers. These include harassment and discrimination online, a shortage of mentors and role models for women, as well as limited funding opportunities and sponsorship opportunities.
MSSA was met with strong opposition by many gamers over the years, some of whom even had daughters, when it promoted its policies of inclusion and enablement.
MSSA has taken proactive measures to address these issues. MSSA has taken initiatives to provide incentives and create credible and real upward movement. MSSA is the only national esports federation with 40% female Board members.
It is important to increase the number of female players in esports. This is not just a matter for fairness and equality but also a practical step towards growing the industry and creating a supportive and inclusive community. We can make esports a better place for all by taking proactive steps to increase gender diversity and inclusion.
