Electronic sports or esports has become a worldwide phenomenon. Millions of people tune in to watch video games online or live. The popularity of esports is growing, and it’s important to promote diversity and inclusivity, especially in terms of gender.
Mind Sports South Africa has been actively promoting female representation in the esports industry since 2009. This is important in a variety of ways. It’s a simple matter of justice and equality. Women should be given the same opportunity to compete in and succeed at esports, as men. We can break down barriers by promoting gender equality in the industry.
Colin Webster, MSSA President, said, “There are practical reasons as well why it is important to have more women play esports. It can also help grow the industry. “Women make up a large portion of the gaming industry. By tapping into this market, companies and organizations can reach a broader audience and increase revenue streams.”
Webster said, “Additionally having more women involved in esports will help to combat some of the toxic attitudes and behaviors that have plagued this industry in the past.” Women have faced discrimination and harassment in the gaming industry for years. But by promoting diversity and inclusion we can create a more welcoming community.
Female players can also benefit from esports. Women can learn valuable skills in teamwork, communication and problem solving by participating in esports. They may also earn Regional, Provincial, and National Colors which could help them obtain bursaries to further their education. These skills can be used in other areas of life, such as careers and personal relationships.
MSSA is well aware that increasing the female representation in esports has its challenges. Women are underrepresented in esports, and those that do participate face many obstacles and barriers. These include online harassment, discrimination and a lack in female role models, mentors and funding opportunities.
MSSA has faced a lot of opposition over the years from gamers. Some of these players even had daughters.
MSSA has taken active steps to address these challenges by promoting gender diversity and inclusion. These initiatives included providing incentives and creating a real and credible upward mobility. MSSA is one of the few esports national associations in the world with a Board that has 40% female members.
