Malta Gaming Authority attended the annual conference of the Gaming Regulators European Forum (GREF), held in Bergen, Norway between 5 and 7, June 2023. The conference this year brought together more than 90 representatives from 26 states.

The event provided a platform for gaming regulators across Europe to have meaningful discussions, share knowledge and collaborate about the latest trends and challenges facing the gaming industry.

Three officials represented the MGA: Senior Legal Counsel Martina Cilia, Chief Officer of Policy & International Affairs Kinga Warda, and Chief Officer of Finance & Business Transformation Peter Spiteri.

Martina Cilia updated the audience on the MGA’s Player Protection Directive, and how markers of harm were included in the discussion. The MGA used a data-driven approach to develop the Player Protection Directive amendments. This was based on research and data, and included consultations with licensees. The MGA could then better assess the current legislation and continue to prioritize the protection of the players.

Peter Spiteri provided an update of the group’s current work and its future goals. He is also co-chairman of the GREF InfoStat Working Group. He said: “The InfoStat Working Group serves as an important platform for regulators who want to discuss how data can be used to improve gambling policy and decision-making”. As chair of the Infostat Group, I am dedicated to harnessing data’s power to foster innovation and responsible gaming practices.

Kinga Warda moderated a panel discussion entitled “Black Market activity: Combatting Illegal Activity”. Kinga Warda, a member of the GREF Board, stated: “The exchanges of ideas and insights at the conference reinforced that collaboration is essential to further strengthen a responsible, enjoyable, and safe environment while protecting individual interests and well-being. In order to develop robust and inclusive policies, it is important that we consider the diverse perspectives of other regulators. We can address the changing landscape of the gaming sector and ensure its sustainability by embracing and collaborating with these diverse viewpoints.
