Around 3 billion people play video games worldwide. People from all over the world play together, sharing stories and adventures. Since long, games have become an important part of world culture and have shaped whole generations all over the world. Games are not just a cultural medium, they also set technological trends. For example, virtual reality, 3D technology, or artificial intelligence. The innovations in games are changing more and more industries. The outstanding cultural and technical importance of games make them world-class.
As the largest video games event in the world, gamescom brings together global players and the industry. Germany is the center of gaming every year, at the end August. This year, it is even truer. We must aim to make sure that the international gaming industry doesn’t just look at Germany one day a year but all year round. We need reliable political support to make sure that games produced in Germany are of the highest quality. It is for this reason that I am very happy to see many politicians returning to gamescom in order to discuss the future of games.
Gamescom Trend: “Upgrade for reality”
No matter if it’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Metaverse, the expertise of the gaming sector is crucial to more and more sectors in the economy. AI is the best example. It is currently a hot topic because of chatbots. But it has been successfully used in the games industry since many years. In video games, it allows for believable behavior of game characters. 3D technology used in games has also allowed for the replacement of entire movie sets and modernisation of education programs.
Gamescom Trend: Games studios as the new dream factories
Video games are epic tales of our times. To do this, you need a team of creative individuals. All sectors of the economy are in need of their expertise, whether it is in programming or interface design, or in creating story universes. The gaming industry is a great place to start if you want to inspire the world today with your stories. Since games are played and understood all over the globe, they can be a great place to start.
Major Political Figures Attending Gamescom
At gamescom, not only do the industry and international gaming community meet, but so do more and more politicians in Germany, Europe, and around the world. There are many political events, including the Gamescom Congress, the Political Opening, and the Debatt(l).e Royale. The official Political Opening of the gamescom will take place on 23 August. Among those attending are Vice-Chancellor and Federal Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate Action Robert Habeck and Hendrik Wüst, Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia. On 24 August, the political discussion Debatt(l)e Royale is scheduled. The participants will be Franziska Giffey, SPD Berlin Senator for Economic Affairs, Energy and Industry and SPD State Party Chair, Nathanael Liminski, Minister for Federal, European and International Affairs and the Media of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Head of the State Chancellery, Emily Buning, Federal Executive Director, Bundnis90/Die Grunen, and Bijan Djir-Sarai, Secretary General, FDP. Lisa Paus will take part in the gamescom Congress in a panel discussion about the protection of minors today in video games.
