GambleAware published a list of donations and pledges made in the first quarter fiscal year 2023/24 (1st April to 30th June 2023).
During the first three months of the year, the charity collected a total of PS430,813.59, which included PS317,099.59 from gambling operators as Research, Education and Treatment contributions (RET). The charity received PS113.714.00 in non-RET contributions, which were funds from unclaimed wins or dormant gambling accounts.
In the current voluntary funding scheme, set up by the government, all those who make money from gambling are required to donate to RET (research, education, and treatment). GambleAware supports the recent Gambling white paper that announced plans to impose a statutory levie on the gambling industry.
Operators are encouraged to donate to GambleAware a minimum 0.1% of their Gross Gambling Yield each year, and those with a GGY less than PS250,000 per annum to donate at least PS250. The Big Four gambling companies have pledged to increase their contributions from 0.1% each to 1% by 2024. GambleAware, in order to maintain transparency with its current arrangements for voluntary funding, publishes quarterly details of the donations and pledges it has received.
The average donation for the quarter was PS2,757.38. Compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year, the RET contribution has dropped by 9%. In the first quarter 2023/24, there were no donations from the biggest gambling operators. This follows the previous pattern in which the largest operators assessed and paid RET contributions at the end of fiscal year after an assessment of their annual GGY.
