The United Kingdom is looking to be at the top of the esports world in university environments. Staffordshire University students will compete for the title of European champion in the largest videogame competition between universities worldwide, UNIVERSITY Esports Masters.
The British players who are part of the Korean Pop Superstars team (KPS) have qualified for the European Grand Final of this tournament. They will compete for victory with their opponents from NUPESU, from the National University of Physical Education and Sport of Ukraine, in VALORANT. The clash, which will be played in online format on July 14, can be watched live on the UE Masters Twitch channel (twitch.tv/uemasters).
The Esports Adventure begins in Staffordshire
Staffordshire University has been one of the UK universities to show the most support in growing the gaming and esports industry. Students who are interested in pursuing careers in competitive gaming can study at a school that has won awards. They will learn how to plan small- and large-scale events, productions, and esports competitions.
The BA (Hons.) Esports program at Staffordshire University is a unique degree in the UK that combines production (digital media, broadcasting, and marketing) with experience in marketing, event management, and community and cultural studies.
Globally, gaming and video game competitions have been positioned as the fastest-growing sector of the entertainment industry. Statista reports that “the United Kingdom has seen a boom in Esports with an increasing number of teams, tournaments and dedicated arenas.”
In 2024, the same source predicts the UK esports industry will generate revenues of PS183.3 millions with a market penetration rate of 27,9%. It estimates that by 2028 revenues will reach PS234 millions and the market share will be 33.1%.
Beyond of a Video Game Competition
UE Masters is the culmination of the UNIVERSITY Esports Season, a global event that has a presence on 26 countries across four continents, and involves more than 100,000 students.
UNIVERSITY Esports’ main goals are to foster a sense community amongst players in Europe, give them an opportunity to compete at high-quality international tournaments, and provide young people with avenues to build a career in the esports industry, as well to help them find a place where they can learn and improve their skills.
UNIVERSITY esports in the UK and Ireland is a project run by NUEL, a company of GGTech Entertainment. This year marks its 13th season. Staffordshire University was the winner of the Winter Split and the National Representative in this edition of UE Masters.
