The Betting and Gaming Council has welcomed the Labour victory in the General Election and is committed to working together with the new government on a world-class betting and gaming industry.
Labour won by a wide margin after Thursday’s elections.
BGC Chair Michael Dugher stated: “On behalf our members, 110,000 people who rely on regulated gaming and betting industry jobs, and 22.5 millions people who bet every month, we are pleased with Labour’s win and their commitment to work with the industry.
This sector is ready to make a contribution in terms of growth, jobs, and investment for the economy. It can be found on the hard-pressed high street through bookmakers. In the leisure and tourist sector, through casinos and bingo rooms, and in technology, where we have members who are world beaters. We invest in almost every constituency and look forward to working together with the newly elected members of parliament.
“BGC’s members are undergoing the most significant regulatory changes for a generation, following the publication and support of the White Paper by Labour. A large part of this work is continuing now that the elections have been completed. Our members now have the political certainty that they need to plan for and invest in a sustainable future.
This work is supported by industry efforts to create world-class standards, and protect the vulnerable. These efforts have transformed the sector over the past few years, and are in stark contrast to the risks posed by an unregulated, unsafe black market online.
The BGC and its members are committed to working with Labour in order to implement the evidence-based, appropriate, regulatory changes that were outlined in the White Paper. This will ensure the measures strike the right balance between protecting those who are vulnerable while still allowing the majority of bettors to enjoy betting responsibly without being overly impacted.
