GambleAware, Great Britain’s top commissioner for reducing gambling harm, has created a partnership of treatment providers and support providers through a robust process that has been built on extensive engagement. The National Gambling Support Network, formerly the National Gambling Treatment Service (or the “NGTS”), will provide a regional-first approach. This will improve referral routes and ensure that individuals get the right support.
The National Gambling Support Network is a network of third-sector treatment providers that provide confidential, free support for people who are experiencing gambling problems or those who have been affected by gambling.
GambleAware created this network to address the changing needs of people at risk from gambling harms in Great Britain. It will be geared towards early intervention and will focus on prevention. This will prevent the escalation and provide support that is needed, which will relieve pressure on NHS.
Transforming early intervention, support, and treatment services will have long-term benefits to the gambling harms industry. This will include the promotion of a holistic service, as well as creating incentives for providers to invent and deliver high-quality, cost-effective outcomes for users.
This will be reflected in a regional approach that provides better referral pathways for those who are suffering from harms due to gambling. Staff will refer anyone in need to their local treatment provider during any brief intervention for gambling harm or any initial call at the National Gambling Helpline. Local providers will perform an assessment of the individual and recommend the most appropriate support or treatment option.
Anna Hargrave is GambleAware’s Chief Commissioning Officer. She said, “As the country’s leading commissioner for this sector, it’s a pleasure to announce the National Gambling Support Network (NGSN) and our increased investment in gambling harm.
The NGSN was built on solid foundations. It brings together a strong network of regional providers who are active agents of change and work to meet the needs of people. We hope to open up new opportunities for collaboration with other local agencies and services by adopting a regional approach. We can help people who are suffering from gambling-related harm by expanding our reach and engaging with the local authorities.
In the development of the new NGSN, it was crucial to involve people who have lived with gambling harms. These people’s views will be key to shaping the future operation of the network to continue meeting the needs of those who have suffered from gambling harm.
Wayne, ALERTS, a person who has experienced gambling harms said that “Gambling injuries can affect anyone.” It is important that support and treatment services are available to people as quickly, effectively, and as representatively as possible.
“With the creation of the National Gambling Support Network, those suffering from gambling harm can get specialist, tailored treatment or support, depending on their needs, anywhere they are in Great Britain.”
