This June, the inaugural European Games Esports Championships will host esports teams and athletes from all over Europe. They will compete in two of the top esports games – eFootball 2023 (eFootball 2023) and Rocket League.
The esports competitors will compete alongside the 7000 athletes from 48 countries in the third edition European Games, which takes place in Krakow in the Malopolska region in Poland. The #EGE23 adds a new level of competition and entertainment for this sporting event.
Global Esports Federation (GEF) and European Olympic Committees (EOC) confirmed #EGE23 would run from 30 June to 2 July. The International Congress Centre in Katowice, Poland will be the epicenter of digital competition. This event is expected to become a landmark in the sporting calendar for the region.
Rocket League Open Category and Open Category for eFootball2023 at #EGE23 allows esports athletes to compete for national honors.
Aurelia Ruetsch (GEF Board Member, Chair of EGE23 Coordination Commission) commented on the pioneering nature of #EGE23. She said: “The European Games Esports Championships represent a groundbreaking moment for esports across Europe.” After being part of the team for the first European Games Baku in 2015, I’m thrilled to see yet another first, as the EOC convenes top-level esports tournaments alongside traditional sports and celebrates youth culture at the heart of Europe.
“We are thrilled to see esports at this prestigious event, the European Games. The #EGE23 marks a major milestone in the growth of esports across Europe. Chris Chan, GEF President, described the event as a “joyful celebration of youth, sport, and esports”.
The #EGE23 will also feature GEFestival, which is a celebration of the inclusive culture of esports through games, music, and entertainment, and GEFcon. This global convention brings together thought leaders in business, technology, sports, and esports to share and learn.
The Esports Championships are a great addition to the European Games and highlight the progressive vision for diversity and inclusion in the sports world. They also show the similarities they have when it comes to dedication, strategy and pursuit of excellence. Spyros Capralos said that EOC was delighted to work with the Global Esports Federation for the first of a series of planned initiatives.
Hasan Arat is the Chair of the EOC Coordination Commission to the European Games 2023. He said: “The EOC has partnered with Global Esports Federation in order to host the Esports Championships this summer in Katowice.
“Esports are hugely popular around the world, particularly among younger generations. As the European Games continue to look for innovative ways to attract a younger crowd, this is an important step.
The International Congress Center will be an ideal venue for this competition. I am sure that all of the esports participants will find it a memorable experience.”
